Unlock the Future of Learning Evaluation

Join us for an exclusive webinar introducing the High Impact Evaluation (HIE) methodology—a breakthrough approach that is transforming how organizations measure, maximize, and demonstrate the value of their learning and development investments.

For decades, traditional evaluation models have offered limited guidance, relying on outdated “smile sheets” and reactive metrics that fail to drive real improvement. High Impact Evaluation, developed by internationally recognized experts Dr. Lynette Gillis and Allan Bailey of the Centre for Learning Impact (Canada), marks a new era in training evaluation. This evidence-based, predictive, and proactive model empowers organizations to:

    • Align training with business strategy and outcomes through Business Impact Mapping
    • Detect risks early with field-tested indicators and “early warning radar”
    • Diagnose root causes of performance gaps using advanced diagnostic tools
    • Implement targeted solutions from a curated catalog of best practices
    • Engage leadership with executive-friendly dashboards and actionable insights

Adopted by leading organizations worldwide—including Harvard Business Publishing, Coca-Cola, Emirates Airline, MIT, Boeing, Capital One, and over 26 Canadian federal departments—HIE is the gold standard for driving strategy, impact, and continuous improvement in learning.

Who Should Attend? This session is ideal for learning and development professionals, HR leaders, training managers, and anyone seeking to ensure their learning programs deliver measurable business value.

Competency Framework: Adult Learning Principles, Learning and Development Practice, Evaluation, Instructional Design, Assessment, Coaching, Facilitation and Social Learning

She has conducted hundreds of evaluations and is co-author of the forthcoming “Handbook for High Impact Evaluation: Predictive Proactive Training Evaluation.”

Like many L&D folk, her career started by accident when she was asked to develop victim support training for the Tasmanian Police Force. Focused on attitudinal change, developing this training sparked a fascination with how adults learn that has never left her. Since moving to New Zealand she has trained counsellors, lectured in Adult Learning at the Christchurch College of Education and worked in both embedded and consultancy L&D roles. From developing eLearning with Doctors at the CDHB to working alongside Army officers to build leadership training, Karen is fascinated by how we craft authentic and effective learning experiences. Karen acts as a judge for multiple NZATD awards categories and was the 2024 Learning Practitioner of the Year.

      MEMBER ONLY EVENT

You need to be logged into the website to register for this event.

Take a little space on a Friday afternoon to talk technical with your fellow NZATD members. Show Your Work is a relaxed, member-led session designed to explore practical questions, challenge assumptions, and share insights from the field of training and development.

      ️ Session Agenda

      • Introductions (5–10 mins): Meet and greet fellow members.

      • Focus Topic (20 mins):

Show Your Work – Designing Without Death by PowerPoint

Have you ever sat through a presentation where the speaker reads every word on the slide—and your brain quietly switches off?

When we’re asked to read and listen at the same time, learning suffers. Both activities compete for the same verbal processing channel, while our visual channel sits underused. This is where dual coding comes in.

In February’s Show Your Work session, we’ll explore:

        • What dual coding is (and why it works)

        • Common design mistakes that undermine learning

        • Practical ways to redesign slides and learning materials so visuals and words work together

This is a discussion based, hands on session. We’ll look at real examples of “deathbyPowerPoint” learning materials and work together to improve them.

The idea for this session comes from a recent Mike Taylor weekly email. Reading it beforehand is optional but will help you get more from the discussion.

Got a favourite example of death by PowerPoint?
Send it to kcherrie@nzatd.org.nz and we may use it in the session.

Join us to sharpen your design thinking and create learning that actually sticks.

      • Open Floor (30 mins): Bring your own questions, ideas, or examples. Let’s learn from each other.

      • Farewells (5 mins): Wrap-up and next steps.

      Competency Framework:  L&D Principles

Generative AI is rapidly transforming the learning and development landscape. It can now produce course materials, assessments, and multimedia resources in minutes, but it also challenges our thinking about authorship, authenticity, and assessment integrity.

This session explores the implications of generative AI for learning and development professionals. It will discuss how these tools can support the design of engaging, inclusive, and ethical learning experiences while identifying why having a human in the loop remains essential.

By the end of the session, participants will:

      • Understand the current capabilities and boundaries of generative AI in L&D.
      • Recognise risks and ethical considerations in content creation and assessment.
      • Identify practical strategies for integrating AI tools effectively into their own practice.

Many experienced women in L&D reach their 40s or 50s with a strong track record, deep capability—and a quiet question: “Is this all there is?” The passion that once fuelled their career has been replaced by fatigue, self-doubt, or a sense of going through the motions. The demands haven’t eased, but the spark feels dimmed.

This powerful 60-minute session is designed to support mid-career women leaders in L&D who are navigating burnout, disconnection, or change. Blending evidence-based high performance strategies with self-leadership coaching tools, the session offers a practical pathway back to clarity, energy, and legacy.

Whether you’re leading learning strategy, developing others, or making pivotal decisions about your own career, this session helps you reconnect with what really matters—so you can lead with confidence, not compromise.

      Themes Covered:

      • The mid-career burnout loop—why it’s not personal, and how to break it
      • Reclaiming energy: mental, emotional, and strategic clarity
      • From output to impact: Leading L&D from legacy, not exhaustion
      • Redefining success in your second act—what stays, what shifts, what matters
      • The “3 Power Zones” framework: Clarity, Energy, Influence

      Purpose:

To equip mid-career L&D professionals—especially women leaders—with the tools and clarity to reignite their energy, reconnect with their purpose, and lead in alignment with the legacy they want to create.

        Key Learning Outcomes

        1. Diagnose the internal narratives that block confident, visible communication in leadership contexts.
        2. Deploy evidence-based techniques to communicate with clarity, authenticity, and influence in critical moments.

Please note change of DAY for this 2 part series

This two-part webinar explores how to design learning experiences that work for more brains, bodies, and backgrounds. It’s a practical, human, and interactive version of my Inclusive by Design session from the Tahu Ignite NZATD Conference 2025.

Part 1 introduces key principles of inclusive design and shows how small design choices can transform participation, confidence, and belonging.

Part 2 will dive deeper into the topic chosen by participants in Part 1 — options may include neurodiversity and learning, the psychology of engagement, psychological safety, designing for cognitive load and accessibility, or whatever topic would be more impactful for participants.

        Outcomes:

Participants will leave with practical tools, a deeper understanding of inclusive learning design, and ideas they can immediately apply in their own context.

As a proudly neurodivergent facilitator, Marc brings lived experience and deep empathy to his work on inclusion, helping teams understand and celebrate the different ways people think and learn.

Originally from Mexico City with Belgian roots, Marc’s path has taken him through London to Auckland, where he now lives with his partner and two rescue greyhounds. When he’s not designing workshops, he’s usually kayaking, hiking, or exploring new ways to make learning more inclusive and meaningful.

Accessibility in eLearning is often treated as a technical compliance task, yet the barriers learners experience are usually created by everyday design and build decisions. This session sets a clear baseline for what accessibility means in digital learning, the range of digital access needs it supports, and how WCAG 2.2 can be translated into practical choices that learning teams can apply with confidence.

Using examples drawn from eLaHub auditing and the eLa1000 Accessibility Assessment, we will focus on the most common issues that prevent learners from fully accessing content, including contrast, images of text, drag and drop interactions, media alternatives for audio and video, moving content, and heading structure. The session also explores the relationship between accessibility and inclusivity, covering plain language, inclusive instructions, and better representation, and closes with a practical route to benchmarking and improving accessibility across an organisation with a progress over perfection mindset.

As learning designers, we know it's essential to communicate simply and clearly with our learners. That means we need to be good writers. (Spoiler alert: good writers use plain language!)

This webinar helps you assess your own skill level as a writer. It shows you where your writing style is making things easier or harder for your learners.

This is a session where I'll take you through an assessment your own writing.

You'll leave knowing what your writing strengths are and what you can work on to make your learning material more effective.

What to expect from this session:

          1. Framing the Experience

The LMS is often the first and last touchpoint in an employee’s learning journey.

Move from systems thinking to experience thinking: not “what can users click” but “how does it feel to learn here?”.

The goal: reduce friction, increase connection, and support staff to succeed.

          2. The First Impression: Logging In

The login page sets the tone — make it simple, welcoming, and aligned with organisational identity.

Use language that connects (“Welcome back” vs. “Log in”).

Avoid unnecessary barriers — fewer steps, fewer distractions.

          Consider accessibility and mobile responsiveness.

          3. Orientation and Onboarding

Use clear dashboards and guided tours to help new users navigate confidently.

Surface essential learning first — mandatory, role-specific, or onboarding modules.

Incorporate microlearning for “just-in-time” understanding of key tasks or tools.

Embed supportive tone and cultural connection (e.g., use of Te Reo Māori greetings, organisational values).

          4. Finding and Accessing Learning

Improve course discoverability through metadata, categories, and curated learning pathways.

Use clear, user-friendly naming conventions — avoid jargon.

Showcase learning through engaging visuals, featured links, or recommendations.

Balance mandatory and self-directed learning to promote autonomy.

          5. Language and Engagement

The words used throughout the LMS shape perception and motivation.

Write for clarity, warmth, and purpose — instructional tone doesn’t have to be cold.

Align tone of voice across dashboards, course descriptions, and notifications.

In a world that moves fast, learning often happens in fragments. The Art of the Pause invites practitioners to rediscover the quiet spaces that make learning whole. Through mindful creativity, we explore how slowing down restores presence, strengthens engagement, and allows insight to take root.

Drawing from her experience leading creative teams and facilitating reflective learning experiences, Jordan Harcourt-Hughes shares simple, human-centred tools that bring balance and depth to learning design and facilitation. Participants will experience creative micro-practices that restore focus, calm, and connection - for themselves and the people they support.

This session offers both theory and practice, combining mindfulness, creativity, and reflective design to reawaken a sense of purpose and possibility in L&D work.

After this session, participants will be able to:

          • Integrate reflective pauses into learning design and facilitation.

Please note earlier TIME for this session

The theme of this session is Digital Wellness in the Workplace: helping employees regain focus, energy, and presence despite constant digital distractions.

The session explores how poor digital habits like doomscrolling, constant app switching, and unmanaged smartphone use quietly drain productivity, engagement, and well-being.

This session will help HR and L&D leaders recognise and address digital overwhelm as both a wellness challenge and a performance lever.

Drawing from emerging digital wellness research, this session offers attendees the most up-to-date insights on how technology habits affect focus, engagement, and workplace culture while acknowledging the ongoing debate in this rapidly evolving field. Participants will gain practical, evidence-informed strategies to:

          1. Identify when poor digital habits may be eroding focus, engagement, and team effectiveness.
          2. Evaluate how organizational norms and communication practices contribute to digital overload.
          3. Lead by example modeling digital balance as a core element of leadership effectiveness and employee well-being.

Soft skills are now seen as core business capabilities - or as we increasingly call them, Power Skills. But how do we teach things like empathy, listening and coaching at scale, in ways that feel human and impactful?

In this session, we’ll explore how AI can support the development of very human skills through Storyline-based modules that embed AI to simulate leadership conversations. You’ll see what’s possible when learning design meets AI, and hear how learners are responding in practice.

We’ll anchor this case study in both research and experience; from Dr. Bhavana Arora’s insights into the importance of Power Skills, to the recent “AI in L&D 2025: The Race for Impact” report by Egle Vinuskaite and Donald H Taylor. It’s clear the opportunity isn’t just to use AI, it’s to use it well.

This session focuses on the why and the real-world benefits of integrating AI into learning design, with a light touch on the how.

Curious about how to move beyond static eLearning and into the world of adaptive, AI-powered learning experiences?

In this hands-on technical session, we’ll pull back the curtain on how to embed AI directly into Articulate Storyline to create dynamic, simulated conversations that help learners practise, not just recall, human skills.

You’ll learn, step-by-step, how to build your own AI-driven module from scratch using Storyline and ChatGPT. No coding experience is required.

See how we designed simulations that let learners rehearse real-world scenarios like coaching, difficult conversations and giving praise, while receiving personalised, context-aware feedback.

This session takes you ‘under the hood’ to explore the nuts and bolts of integrating AI into L&D workflows, from early missteps to breakthrough moments, and how this approach transforms traditional eLearning into an agile, scalable capability-building tool.

If you’ve ever wondered how AI can be embedded within your existing tools to make learning more adaptive, engaging, and human, this session is for you. Leave with the knowledge, workflows, and inspiration to start creating your own AI-powered learning experiences.

Competency Framework Learning and Development Practice; Instructional Design; E-learning

Session Theme and Target Audience:  Future ways of working

          Speaker:  Cain Prentice

Cain Prentice partners with organisations to unlock performance through learning that actually works. With diverse international experience spanning finance, government, not-for-profit and corporate sectors, Cain has seen more than his fair share of dull, box-ticking training programs- and he dislikes them just as much as your employees do. His mission is simple: to turn organisational training from a chore into an engaging experience for learners that impacts performance.

At Pukeko Learning Solutions, Cain collaborates with companies across Australia and New Zealand to diagnose performance challenges and design bespoke training that resonates. His approach blends rigorous analysis with storytelling, creativity, and scenario-based learning, making the content engaging, memorable and practical. Whether leveraging AI for personalisation or using creative reinforcement strategies, Cain ensures training is not only completed, but remembered- and applied.

We all communicate - but few of us do it effectively. This high-energy session dives into the everyday communication challenges that shape your business, relationships, and results at work.

              We’ll unpack:

              • The four communication styles and how to work with (not against) them.
              • How to influence, connect, and lead through clarity and empathy.
              • The small shifts that change everything about how people feel heard.

It’s relatable, real, and surprisingly funny. Because communication should be practical, not painful.

Competency Framework Adult Learning Principles; Learning and Development Practice; Informal / Social Learning; On-the-job Training

Session Theme and Target Audience: In my kete - Current and aspiring L&D professionals

              Speaker: Carly Shorter

Carly Shorter – keynote speaker & workshop facilitator

I help leaders, trainers, and teams stop just “talking at” each other and start having conversations that actually change things. Whether it’s in the boardroom, at a conference, or across the kitchen table - your people will walk away knowing how to connect, influence, and communicate in a way that builds connection and real belonging.

Carly is the founder of Communicate Powerfully; a programme built from both science and real-life experience. She’s spent 14 years in radio, another chunk of time leading national teams, and the past 12 years helping organisations across Aotearoa and Asia Pacific have the conversations that matter most.

Carly isn’t about “tick-the-box” training—she’s about transformational change. Attendees say her sessions feel real, raw, and fun. She’s known for being deeply authentic - which makes others drop their guard and be authentic too.
