Take a little space on a Friday afternoon to talk technical with your fellow NZATD members. Show Your Work is a relaxed, member-led session designed to explore practical questions, challenge assumptions, and share insights from the field of training and development.
️ Cognitive Load Theory (CLT): What is it - and why does it matter?
Have you ever designed (or sat through) learning that felt like too much? Too many slides, too many words, too many ideas competing for attention?
Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) helps us understand how people process information, and what happens when learning design unintentionally overwhelms working memory.
This session is for you whether:
- You’re new to Cognitive Load Theory and want a clear, practical explanation, or
- You’re already using CLT and would like to share ideas, examples, or lessons learned to help others design learning that’s easier to absorb.
Bring your curiosity — and if you like, bring an example. A slide, a module, a handout, or a learning activity you’ve seen (or created) that might be doing too much at once. We’ll use real experiences to explore what Cognitive Load Theory looks like in practice.
Join the conversation – before and after the session
We’ve set up a Show Your Work Microsoft Teams channel to support ongoing discussion. This space is for:
- Sharing questions and ideas before the session
- Continuing the conversation after the session
- Exploring this topic and other practical L&D challenges with fellow members over time
When you register, we’ll add you to the Show Your Work Teams channel unless you let us know you’d prefer not to be included. Participation in the channel is optional — you’re welcome to engage as much or as little as suits you.
We’ll also share a small number of resources in advance to support thinking and discussion.
